Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. will host its 2029 conclave in Memphis, the city said in a press release on July 8.
A historically Black fraternity, Phi Beta Sigma was founded in 1914 at Howard University.
“This is more than a convention announcement,” Memphis Mayor Paul Young said in a press release. “Choosing Memphis means you see what we see — a city and a people rising. Phi Beta Sigma’s values of brotherhood, scholarship and service align perfectly with the momentum we’re building here.”
The city expects the event to bring thousands of visitors to Memphis, along with “millions of dollars in economic impact for local businesses and hospitality partners.” The city also touted the conclave as an opportunity to showcase Memphis on a national platform.
“We’re ready to roll out the red carpet — and the blue carpet too,” Young said in the press release, invoking one of Phi Beta Sigma’s primary colors. “To the brothers of Phi Beta Sigma: welcome to the 901. Let’s make history together.”
The organization scheduling its conclave in Memphis comes months after the Church of God in Christ said it was not going to host its annual convention in Memphis after 2025.
