Must read

Elmira police have released the name of a person who died after a shooting in the city the evening of June 9.

Police have also charged a suspect in connection with a second shooting the same night that injured three people, but have not indicated if the two incidents were related.

The person who was killed in a shooting at Pulaski Park on West Center Street was Yasean J. McQueen, 31, no address given, according to the Elmira Police Department.

Around 8 p.m. June 9, police officers responded to the vicinity of Pulaski Park for a report of gunshots with injuries, police said. Arriving officers found McQueen and another person, whose name has not been released, who had both been struck by gunfire.

Both victims were transported to an area hospital, where McQueen was pronounced dead. The other victim was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Around 8:15 p.m. Monday, police received another call for gunshots in the area of the 900 block of Oak Street.

When officers arrived, they found one person who had been struck by gunfire and learned two other victims had left the scene in a private vehicle to seek treatment for their injuries. Police interviewed all three people, who were also not named, and they were all treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

As a result of their investigation, police charged Jayzell J. Mccoy, 22, of Elmira, with one count of first-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a felony, in connection with the Oak Street shooting.

Police say more charges are pending, but they didn’t indicate if McCoy is a suspect in the fatal Pulaski Park shooting. He is also currently on New York state parole for a previous conviction in Chemung County for second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

The investigation into both shootings is continuing. Police are asking anyone who has further information on either of the incidents to contact the Elmira Police Department at 607-737-5626, or the anonymous tip line at 271-HALT.
