Must read

Jul. 20—Anchorage police are investigating a downtown shooting early Sunday morning involving “several victims,” the department said.

Additional information on how many people were shot, the extent of their injuries or whether there were any fatalities was not immediately available from the Anchorage Police Department.

Police said in an online update that around 2:50 a.m. Sunday, officers responded to reports of shots fired in the vicinity of Fourth Avenue and G Street.

“Upon arrival officers located several victims,” police said.

The area of the shooting is across the street from the Anchorage Police Department’s headquarters downtown. Social media posts from downtown bar patrons described a bustling late-night scene when people heard several shots fired, with video showing police officers and emergency responders working on Fourth Avenue and trying to secure the area from bystanders in the aftermath of the shooting.

Police said Sunday morning that officers are “following up on leads.” At this time, a suspect hasn’t been detained and “there is no suspect information to release at this time,” police said.

The relationship between people involved and the motive behind the shooting remain under investigation, police said.

Additional information about the specific location and other circumstances surrounding the shooting was not available from police. The incident prompted the temporary closure of roads and sidewalks in the area of Fourth Avenue around G and H streets.

The Anchorage Police Department asked anyone with information about the shooting, including surveillance footage, to call dispatch at 311 (option 1) or 907-786-8900 (option 0).

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
