Police officers were assigned to patrol the campus of a Massachusetts high school on Thursday after a staffer’s comments on the killing of Charlie Kirk sparked safety concerns, authorities said.
A staff member at Wachusett Regional High School in Holden took to social media to share their thoughts on the assassination of Kirk, a conservative political activist who was shot by a sniper while speaking at a Utah college campus on Wednesday, according to the Holden Police Department.
“These comments sparked heated debate, millions of views, and brought into question the safety of school operations for both students and staff at WRHS,” the department said in a statement.
While investigators uncovered no credible threats of violence, Holden police assigned officers to work an 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. shift at the school, as well as day-shift officers on to “ensure a safe and orderly dropoff.”
“We will continue to monitor the situation, and we will remain in contact with WRHS administration to provide them with any public safety resources necessary,” the department added.
It wasn’t immediately clear if the staff member in question would face any disciplinary measures.
Boston 25 News has reached out to the school district for comment on the matter.
Investigators on Thursday released images of a person of interest in the killing of Kirk and offered a $100,000 reward for information that leads to an identification and arrest.
