Popular coffee chain seeking to open Peoria location at busy intersection

Must read

A popular northwest coffee chain could be coming to the Peoria area.

Dutch Bros Coffee is seeking to build a standalone shop in Peoria at the intersection of University Street and War Memorial Drive, according to city councilmember Chuck Grayeb.

The coffee shop will require a special-use permit from the city of Peoria, Grayeb said. The company will go before the Peoria Planning and Zoning Commission on May 1.

The plot of land at the intersection of University and War Memorial has long been vacant, but the city and nearby neighborhood groups have been selective with what they would like to see built there.

The land was most recently active as a Jim McComb Chevrolet dealership that closed more than 15 years ago.

Grayeb said there have been proposals to build things such as a gas station at the site that have been turned away.

The most recent development planned for the site was for a credit union, but those plans never came to fruition. IH Mississippi Valley Credit Union bought the land in 2021 for $1.4 million. It has since listed the property for sale at a price tag of $1.6 million.

No sale of the property has been filed with the county clerk’s office.

Grayeb said he thinks a Dutch Bros Coffee would be a good fit at the site and believes the neighborhoods will back the proposal.
