The Inglewood Unified School District reported the incident to the Inglewood Police Department on Thursday, Sept. 11

Faculty at Bennett-Kew School, an elementary school in Inglewood, Calif., allegedly discovered a “racist pipe bomb” on Wednesday, Sept. 10.
Around 8:30 a.m. local time, Bennett-Kew School African American resource specialist Tammy Mosley went to her car to retrieve supplies, where she allegedly discovered the device behind her car, according to a statement from Najee Ali, civil rights activist and director of Project Islamic Hope, per CW affiliate KTLA.
An image of the device obtained by KTLA shows five cylinder-shaped objects taped together, with text that reads: “THE BIY N—–,” and the racial slur underlined.
In his statement, Ali called the alleged incident “a direct threat of racial terrorism against an African American educator and the entire school community.”
He is also asking for state leaders to launch a hate crime investigation.
“I’m shocked and horrified that a racist makeshift bomb was discovered behind my car,” Mosley in a statement shared by EURWeb.
“This was not only an attack on me, but a threat to the safety of every child and staff member on campus. We need a full state investigation by Attorney General Rob Bonta’s office to ensure this never happens again,” the statement continued.
Inglewood Unified School District reported the incident to the Inglewood Police Department on Thursday, Sept. 11.
“We are committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of our school community,” Inglewood Unified School District said in a statement, per KTLA.

Representatives for Inglewood Unified School District, Inglewood Police Department and Project Islamic Hope did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for more information on Thursday.
