A Saint Clair man was jailed in Schuylkill County Prison after borough police said he threatened to “kill everyone” in a building and broke into a man’s apartment early Thursday.
Police charged Kevin A. Smith, 36, in connection with the alleged incident on the 100 block of North Second Street. Police said he made a number of threats directed at a man and a woman before entering the man’s apartment by smashing a window while armed with a baseball bat.
According to the affidavit filed by Saint Clair police:
Officers were dispatched to the address around 1 a.m. for a report of a man named Kevin who had smashed the caller’s window and threatened to kill everyone in the North Second Street property.
The caller told police that he was parked in his truck near the building when the defendant approached him. Smith began to threaten him, saying that he was going to “kill everyone, kill everyone in the building,” according to police.
The witness said he eventually went inside his apartment, but after an hour, he heard someone attempting to kick his front door in. He said he was in fear and did not open the door.
About 20 minutes later, Smith broke into the man’s residence by smashing a window in the kitchen. The victim went to the kitchen and saw the defendant armed with a bat. Smith told the man, “I told you I was serious,” at which point the victim called 911.
Police later observed boot marks on the victim’s front door, as well as a large circular dent near the doorknob. Police said there was a broken window above the kitchen sink, with droplets of blood on the glass, window frame, floor and on the wall below the window.
The victim told police that he gave Smith a towel at his request, and the defendant then left the residence.
Another witness, who said Smith was staying with him, provided police with Smith’s Louisville Slugger baseball bat, which had blood smeared on it.
When questioned by police, Smith said he had become angry earlier when he learned the victim gave a woman drugs, possibly causing her to relapse. He then confronted the man at his residence.
Smith, who said he had recently consumed alcohol, admitted to threatening the male victim and hitting his front door with the bat. He also claimed to have called 911. He said he got cut when a frying pan was thrown at him.
Police then spoke to the woman whom Smith mentioned. The woman said Smith confronted her at a bar. He began threatening her, and patrons ultimately removed him from the bar. She heard Smith say he “would be waiting for her” and “was going to get her.”
A short time later, the male victim contacted her, stating that Smith was armed with a knife and that Smith threatened to slit her throat.
After making contact with Smith, police also found and removed a bag of methamphetamine from his pocket.
Smith faces a felony count of burglary and misdemeanors of terroristic threats, possessing an instrument of crime, simple assault, disorderly conduct, criminal mischief, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
He was arraigned by on-call Magisterial District Judge Edward J. Tarantellin on Thursday and jailed in county prison, unable to post $100,000 bail.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 12:45 p.m. July 29 before District Judge David A. Plachko in Port Carbon.
