Scioto Foundation announces first quarter grants for 2025

The Scioto Foundation has announced the approval of 17 grants totaling $167,628.86 for the first quarter of 2025, starting the year by underwriting an unusually large number of community projects all over Scioto County.

The American Red Cross Central Appalachian Region received a $10,000 grant from the Mary Ann Burke Fund to help the Tri-State Chapter respond, prepare and help with disaster recovery.

A grant totaling $15,000 from the Edmund J. Kricker Advised Fund went to the City of Portsmouth to replace the aging and deteriorated playground equipment at Cyndee Secrest Park in Sciotoville, with new playground equipment and poured-in-place rubber surfacing.

A $3,000 grant from the Mary Ann Burke Fund was awarded to Compass Point Housing to purchase welcome kits to be distributed to incoming recovery housing residents from April 1, 2025, through March 31, 2026.

The Dorothy Knost Children’s Summer Music Workshop received $5,000 from the Linda Barry Snyder Fund to help with the costs of providing a summer week of music exposure at no cost to the children who attend from all over the Scioto County area.

The Friends of Greenlawn Cemetery Foundation was awarded $7,400 from the Margaret Anne Strehle Fund and the John & Linda Walker Community Fund to help with the expenses of leveling, repairing and stabilizing over 1,000 monuments dating from the 1800’s through the mid 1900’s.

A $10,000 grant from the Edmund J. Kricker Advised Fund went to Growing Lucasville Opportunities for Phase 3 of the new Lucasville Community Park, a multi-faceted nature walk-themed playground for kids of various ages and abilities.

The Kitchen Collective, Inc. received $4,000 from the Calvin and Martha Johnson Fund and the Richard D. Marting Fund in support of its Meals of Hope project located on Second Street in the Boneyfiddle District of Portsmouth.

Miami University in Oxford, Ohio was awarded $50,000 from the Bess & Marie Pixley Fund to underwrite scholarship awards to help make a Miami education more affordable to students who reside in Scioto County.

A $850 grant from the Edmund J. Kricker Unrestricted Fund went to Notre Dame Preschool to help cover the cost of a Tonies listening system, along with compatible songs, books, headphones and a storage system for the school’s listening ad literacy center.

The Ohio Bible Conference, Inc. in Otway, Ohio received $15,000 from the Edmund J. Kricker Advised Fund for the installation of an outdoor playground for its summer youth camp and other programs.

Portsmouth Little Theatre was awarded a grant of $8,778.86 from the Edmund J. Kricker Unrestricted Fund to assist with the expenses of its mural restoration and audio upgrades.

A grant totaling $3,500 from the Phil & Mary Jenkins Benevolent Fund went to Serenity Outreach to support its Community Outreach Heath & Wellness Program providing essential sundry and non-perishable food items to community youth.

Sierra’s Haven for New and Used Pets received $7,500 from the Harold Micklethwaite Fund to help with the costs of testing supplies and medications for vaccinations and treatments of dogs and cats, along with drugs for spay/neuter surgeries.

A grant of $8,000 from the Edmund J. Kricker Unrestricted Fund went to St. Francis Outreach & Charitable Giving to aid in providing food assistance to Scioto County residents living below the federal poverty guidelines and facing food insecurity.

St. John Paul II Scioto Catholic St. Mary’s Church Campus received $12,500 from the Edmund J. Kricker Unrestricted Fund for the replacement of three sets of deteriorated exterior doors facing Market Street.

An award of $4,600 from the James & Tabitha Pugh Fund went to the Trillium Project for its upcoming “River Giants: Puppets from Appalachian Folklife” project.

“Save a Life Appalachia,” a program which provides evidence-based trainings to reduce the risks of firearm injuries and facilities, received $2,500 from the Phil & Mary Jenkins Benevolent Fund.

Annual grant deadlines for the Scioto Foundation are March 31, June 20, September 30 and December 31.
