Various ready-to-eat foods, including sandwiches and pastas, sold and distributed in Washington have been recalled in a listeria outbreak linked to Fresh & Ready Foods of San Fernando, California.
The Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, along with state and local partners, are investigating the multistate outbreak of listeria infections linked to food products that don’t need additional cooking produced by Fresh & Ready Foods. While they began investigating the illnesses last year, there wasn’t enough evidence to identify a source, according to a May 10 “do not eat” update from the FDA.
The investigation was reopened in April when FDA investigators found listeria in environmental samples collected from Fresh & Ready Foods during a routine surveillance inspection, according to the update. Analysis confirmed the strain of listeria at Fresh & Ready Foods matched the strain of listeria that has caused illness in this outbreak.
Health officials are urging that no one eat, sell or serve the recalled items, which were sold and distributed in several states, including Washington, last month. Additionally, anyone who purchased or received the recalled products are encouraged to “carefully clean and sanitize any surfaces or containers that it touched.”
“Fresh & Ready Foods has taken immediate corrective actions including removing equipment to address this issue to ensure ongoing food safety and compliance with FDA guidance,” according to their May 10 recall.
The recalled items have use-by dates from April 22 to May 19 and include the brand names:

The recalled products were distributed between April 18 through April 28 and sold in Washington, California, Arizona, and Nevada including at hospitals, hotels, convenience stores, airports and airlines, according to the FDA.
How many people have been sickened in the listeria outbreak?
Ten people in California and Nevada have been infected in the listeria outbreak, according to the FDA. However, no illnesses have been reported related to the specific recalled products this publication lists further in this story, according to Fresh & Ready Foods recall announcement.
The FDA did not list any known cases of illness in Washington as of May 10.
Listeria symptoms: What to know about a Listeria infection
Eating food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria can lead to a listeria infection, which can be especially harmful for pregnant women, newborns, adults 65 years old and older and people with weakened immune systems, according to the CDC.
Symptoms usually start within two weeks after eating the contaminated food but can start as early as the same day or as late as 10 weeks after, says the CDC.
Symptoms include “headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions in addition to fever, muscle aches and tiredness,” according to the CDC.
