More than an inch of snow is predicted to cover the Rochester region, starting Monday evening, according to the National Weather Service in Buffalo.
While parts of Monroe County are expected to see more than an inch of snow by Tuesday morning, the Weather Service predicts between 4 to 9 inches of snow near Watertown, just east of Lake Ontario.
“Winter is coming back with a vengeance, but just for a few days,” said Weather Service Meteorologist Liz Jurkowski.
A cold front is predicted to move through western and central New York Monday evening, which will likely bring some rain that is expected to quickly shift to snow, Jurkowski said.
Roughly a half-inch of snow is predicted to fall Monday evening with another half-inch or so to fall overnight in parts of Rochester, she said. In all, she said Rochester should expect 1.2 inches of snow.
“What snow does fall here is not going to stick on the roads, but you will see it on the grass,” she said. “Southeast of Lake Ontario will get the brunt of the snow.”
Winter weather advisory issued in NY
The Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for Oswego, Jefferson and Lewis counties, where 4 to 9 inches of snow is predicted to fall by 6 p.m. Tuesday. The advisory runs from Monday evening through Tuesday evening.
The week ahead is also predicted to be “quite windy,” Jurkowski said. Gusts in western New York are predicted to reach between 30 and 40 mph on Tuesday, according to the Weather Service. With cooler highs already on tap this week – potentially dipping to the low 30s on Tuesday – it will feel far colder when considering the wind chill, Jurkowski said. Wind chills in the teens are possible.
The high is expected to rise a bit each day as the week progresses – to the upper 40s by the end of the workweek, according to the Weather Service. The normal high in the second week of April in Rochester is just above 50 degrees.
