Nine Army bases have been renamed so far in 2025 by President Donald Trump and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth. The decision reverses former President Joe Biden’s decision to rid the bases of their Confederate titles in 2021.
Sen. Duckworth (D-IL) shared strong words on June 18 about Hegseth’s initiative to revert the Army forts back to their original, confederate names.
“I don’t know whether you are inexperienced or too incompetent, but I wonder when you will actually focus on our nation’s warfighting mission,” Duckworth said. “Let the military get back to its real job.”
The president announced the changes while visiting Fort Bragg in North Carolina on June 10 as part of the U.S. Army’s 250th birthday celebrations.
While the nine Army forts once again bear the names of their Confederate roots, the bases actually honor different honorary U.S. soldiers who happen to share a surname with the original Confederate soldiers.
How many Army bases are being renamed?
Trump announced on June 10, that seven additional Army bases would receive new names. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth also changed the names of two forts earlier in 2025.
Altogether, nine bases are impacted.
Are there any renamed bases in Tennessee?
No. The forts are all located in the South, however.
The impacted bases are in Virginia, Texas, Georgia, Louisiana, North Carolina and Alabama.
