Multiple lanes on the John F. Kennedy Memorial Bridge between Louisville and Jeffersonville will be closed through the end of 2025 for maintenance, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet officials said in a July 28 news release.
The right three lanes and right shoulder of the bridge, which carries southbound Interstate 65 over the Ohio River, will be closed for ongoing construction, officials said. During the closure, crews will replace the bridge’s expansion joints — a part of the travel surface that allows it to absorb the movements caused by thermal expansion and contraction.
The closure will stretch across the entirety of the bridge, but access to Interstates 64 and 71 will remain open, officials said.
Crews will install barrier walls on the bridge from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 29, requiring the right four lanes be temporarily shut down for the installation process, officials said. Two lanes will remain open during the installation, and access to I-64 and I-71 will be preserved. Motorists are advised to expect delays.
The left three lanes of the Kennedy Bridge were closed in February as a safety precaution after the expansion joints on the Indiana approach were damaged. Contractors made temporary repairs that allowed the lanes to reopen in April while KYTC devised a plan for a long-term replacement project, officials said.
Officials expect the project, which costs $6.9 million, to be completed in April 2026, with intermittent lane closures throughout the process.
