Stormy weather is moving into Mississippi Monday, April 21 and some thunderstorms may be severe bringing threats of damaging wind, hail and possibly localized flash flooding.
“For the most part, we’re going to have some widespread showers with embedded thunderstorms and a few of those storms could become strong to potentially severe later this afternoon into this evening,” said Daniel Lamb, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Jackson. “It will be south of a line from Vicksburg to Yazoo City to Tupelo.
“So, it’s a pretty big chunk of the state. If any of those storms do become severe, the main threats are damaging wind gusts and hail up to the size of a quarter.”
Lamb said wind gusts could be as high as 60 mph and flash flooding is possible, too. Lamb said flash flooding isn’t expected to be widespread, but with the possibility of isolated heavy rainfall, it can’t be ruled out.
The system is expected to bring rain and storms to the entire state through most of the week, but not with Monday’s threats.
“We’re not seeing any threat of severe weather the rest of the week,” Lamb said. “There will be a chance of thunderstorms, but nothing we expect to be severe.”
Much of Mississippi will be at marginal risk of severe storms Monday afternoon and evening and wet, stormy weather is expected across the state the rest of the week.
