Pojoaque school board picks new superintendent
The Pojoaque Valley school board has appointed Channell Segura as the district’s new superintendent, replacing Amy Suman after she spent one year in Pojoaque’s top education job.
Most recently serving as assistant deputy secretary of the state Public Education Department, Segura brings over 19 years of experience to the role as a teacher and administrator throughout the state. Before that, Segura served as chief of schools for Albuquerque Public Schools, superintendent in the Truth or Consequences school district and in Santa Fe as an assistant superintendent for instructional and school support.
“I look forward to working alongside our staff, students, families, tribal leaders, and community partners to build on the district’s strong foundation and shape a thriving future for Pojoaque Valley,” Segura stated in a news release issued by the school district.
A Santa Fe Public Schools graduate, Segura has also spent a large part of her career directing AVID programs, which aim to give a leg up to first-generation college students and groups otherwise underrepresented in higher education.
She started her education career in 2004 as an English Language Arts teacher and AVID coordinator at Capital High School, where she stayed until becoming principal — a position she held from 2011 to 2017 — afterward becoming state program manager of the federal AVID program.
“Dr. Segura’s visionary leadership, commitment to students, and proven ability to build inclusive school communities make her the ideal choice to lead Pojoaque Valley School District into its next chapter,” board president Adam Muller stated in the release.
