TOMS RIVER — A South Amboy man was sentenced Friday to six years in state prison for a fatal hit-and-run on Route 35 in Brick, said Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer.
Mark Carey, Jr., 21, pleaded guilty to knowingly leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident resulting in the death of another in April before state Superior Court Judge Kimarie Rahill. Carey was 19 at the time of the crime.
The crash occurred Jan. 13, 2024. At 9:15 a.m. on that date, Brick Police responded to the area of Route 35 South and Bay Avenue for a hit and run collision involving a female pedestrian, later identified as Julia Sutton, 56, of Weehawken, on the shoulder of the state highway, according to the Prosecutor’s Office.

Sutton was taken to Ocean University Medical Center in Brick, where she was pronounced dead, the statement said.
A criminal investigation into Sutton’s death determined that she had been struck by a 1999 Ford Explorer, registered to Carey. Carey was also identified as the driver of the vehicle at the time of the hit-and-run. He was taken into custody at his home in South Amboy without incident, according to the Prosecutor’s Office.
Supervising Assistant Prosecutor Jaime Schron and Assistant Prosecutor Lynn Juan were in charge of the case.
