Apr. 21—A fire late Saturday at a 24-unit apartment building left at least eight people in five units displaced as of Monday, authorities said.
The fire reported just before 10 p.m. Saturday on Blackberry Street at the Blackberry Condominiums triggered a two-alarm response, according to the Anchorage Fire Department.
There were no injuries reported in association with the fire but firefighters rescued a cat from one of the units, the department said. Two units were extensively damaged by the flames and others sustained water damage.
The American Red Cross of Alaska responded to the scene. The organization had helped eight people in five units as of Monday, according to spokesperson Taylar Sausen. That aid included blankets, snacks, water and financial assistance.
A preliminary cause for the fire was not immediately available.
The Blackberry Street fire was one of multiple fires over the weekend, including several on Friday night.
During one response on Askeland Drive on Friday, someone drove over a 5-inch hose being used as a water-supply line to an engine, putting that supply at risk, according to the fire department. The driver was cited for crossing a fire hose and the hose is out of service, they said.
