SOUTH BEND — South Bend Police say the suspect in an armed man incident near Indiana University South Bend‘s campus on Monday, Sept. 22, is in custody.
In an email sent Monday night, SBPD said police responded to a report of a domestic disturbance in the 1000 block of South 23rd Street shortly after 8 p.m. Monday. Officers were told the suspect discharged a firearm, then got into a vehicle, which was then reported to have crashed in the area of Northside Boulevard and Clover Street.
Witnesses told police the driver exited the vehicle, fired additional shots and ran from the scene. As of 11:30 p.m. Monday, no injuries from the gunfire were reported.
IUSB issued a shelter-in-place alert, which has since been lifted.
On Tuesday, police said the suspect was in custody, describing the incident as a domestic disturbance and shots-fired case, and the SPBD Violent Crimes Unit has taken over the investigation. There is no longer an active threat associated with the situation, the email says, and additional information will be released as the investigation continues.
