A man was arrested in Shelby this week in connection with a dead body found in South Carolina.
John Lucas Rice, 21, of Spartanburg, South Carolina, has been arrested in a 2021 homicide after human remains were found in a Gaffney, South Carolina yard.
According to the Cherokee County Sheriff Steve Mueller, John Lucas Rice, 21, of Spartanburg, was arrested on Sept. 19, after Cherokee County deputies said he confessed to killing Kevin Scott Brookshire of Chesnee nearly three years ago.
Investigators with the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s cold case unit, following up on a tip, contacted the Cherokee County Sheriff about Brookshire, a missing person.
On Aug. 22, Cherokee County deputies searched a house at 1316 Robbs School Road in Gaffney. During the search, K9 dogs discovered human remains in the backyard. On Sept. 15, Cherokee County coroners identified the remains as Brookshire.

Investigators considered Rice a person of interest and found him in Shelby days ago. According to Mueller, Rice was being interviewed by investigators when he admitted to killing Brookshire in December 2021.
Rice was extradited to Cherokee County and charged with murder on Sept. 19. The next day, a Cherokee County Magistrate Judge denied him bond. Rice was being held in the Cherokee County Detention Center.
Mueller said the investigation was ongoing.
