State 57 in Door County to close near Jacksonport for two months for culvert replacement

Must read

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation project begun in 2024 to replace drainage culverts under State 57 between Sturgeon Bay and Jacksonport resumes May 5 where the highway crosses Logan Creek south of Jacksonport.

The highway will be closed at that location for about two months.

The work will replace the existing culvert pipes at Logan Creek with a new at-grade slab span bridge.

It’s the third of four culvert replacements that are part of the same DOT project on this stretch of State 57 on the Lake Michigan side of Door County. Last year, the DOT replaced a box culvert at Lily Bay Creek (about 2 miles east of the highway’s intersection with State 42 on the north side of Sturgeon Bay) with a new concrete box culvert and a box culvert at Geisel Creek (just west of Valmy) with a box girder bridge. Those closed the highway from Sept. 3 to Nov. 27.

This phase of the project also will completely close 57, starting May 5 and is estimated to run into sometime in July. No vehicles will be allowed to cross the creeks during construction, although local, business and emergency access will be maintained. The DOT’s recommended detour picks up County T from the south, about 2.5 miles south of the Logan Creek crossing, and County V in downtown Jacksonport from the north.

The final part of this project will see the culvert where 57 crosses Hibbard Creek north of Jacksonport also replaced with a new at-grade slab span bridge. That work is scheduled to run from September to November and also will result in a total closure of the highway with a recommended detour.

A press release from the DOT said the work is needed because the existing culverts are deteriorated. The new drainage structures are intended to reduce the regular maintenance and intermittent traffic disruptions that have taken place at these locations, improve drainage under the highway, reduce saturation and improve longevity of the road core.
