The intersection of State 76 and Larsen Road in the Winnebago County town of Clayton is closed until late September for construction of a roundabout.
The closure began July 7 and extends about 500 feet in each direction of the intersection, according to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. Until Sept. 19, motorists are directed to take a detour by Interstate 41 northbound to U.S. 10 westbound, or U.S. 10 eastbound to I-41 southbound.
State 76 has an annual average daily traffic of 9,800 vehicles, said Bill Bertrand, Wisconsin DOT project manager.
The intersection at State Highway 76 and Larsen Road, in the town of Clayton in Winnebago County, is closed July 7 through Sept. 19 for construction of a roundabout.
The project started June 30. The full project requires excavation, installation of erosion control devices, asphalt paving, as well as work on curbs, gutters, storm sewers, lighting and signs, according to the DOT.
According to the DOT, the full $1.7 million roundabout project aims to increase safety at the intersection, which had 16 crashes between 2016 and 2020, including one that resulted in a fatality and nine that caused injuries. Also, the new Neenah High School, which opened in 2023, is located about a mile east of the intersection and has increased traffic in the area.
