There were some scary moments for a tractor-trailer driver when his truck skidded on a rainy Interstate 295 bridge and came close to going over the edge.
Virginia State Police Sgt. Jessica Shehan said the rig was northbound on the Varina-Enon Bridge around 5:15 a.m. May 28 when the driver slammed on the brakes. The truck slid on the wet pavement and hit a left-lane jersey wall. The impact of the crash sent the cab of the truck over the wall where it hung between the northbound and southbound spans.
Charges are pending against the driver of this tractor-trailer that crashed May 28, 2025, on the Varina-Enon Bridge between Chesterfield and Henrico counties. After it hit the jersey wall on the northbound side, the rig’s cab hung between the bridge’s spans.
The driver was able to get out of the cab and was not injured, Shehan said. An investigation is ongoing into the cause of the wreck, and charges are pending.
The bridge was closed for almost four hours while crews worked to remove the debris and clean up a fuel spill from the truck. Northbound traffic had to be diverted onto the Meadowville Technology Parkway exit.
The bridge was reopened around 9 a.m.
The Varina-Enon Bridge carries I-295 over the James River between Chesterfield and Henrico counties. EMS crews from both counties responded to the scene.
