Storms knock out power to over 40,000 in NJ and results in ‘fatalities,’ Murphy says

Severe thunderstorms have left over 40,000 people in New Jersey without power on the evening of July 3 and have resulted in fatalities, Gov. Phil Murphy announced.

“I have been briefed on the severe thunderstorm and heavy winds that hit Central Jersey this evening and resulted in fatalities. The towns of Plainfield, North Plainfield, Bound Brook, and Dunellen sustained damage, among others,” Murphy posted on X. “If you’re in the area, please stay inside and avoid any downed trees, power lines, or burning transformers.”

In Plainfield, Mayor Adrian O. Mapp has declared a state of emergency for the city until further notice.

PSE&G’s outage map was showing nearly 34,000 customers without power as of 9:15 p.m. The hardest hit counties are: Middlesex with 19,046, Union 7,503 and Somerset 6,118.

JCP&L had nearly 10,000 in the dark as of 9:15 p.m. Ocean County had 3,009 and Hunterdon 2,233.

Orange & Rockland had just over 100 customers without power.
