Summer construction season in Michigan. Where to expect orange barrels blocking traffic

Must read

Summer’s “orange barrel” season is moving full speed ahead, even if that means traffic, temporarily, won’t be.

The Michigan Department of Transportation says a number of new constructions projects are set to begin this week across the state — some that will take weeks or months to complete and others that will tie up traffic for just hours or days.

“By the end of this construction season, we will have fixed, repaired or replaced nearly 24,500 lane miles of roads and 1,900 bridges, supporting thousands of good-paying, local jobs without raising taxes by a dime,” Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said in a press release earlier this year.

Dozens of projects are underway across Michigan this summer. Here’s what to know about new work starting this week across Michigan.

Upcoming MDOT construction projects

The following construction projects are set to start this week, according to MDOT, with travel advisories in effect:

  • Construction for nearly 2 miles of U.S. 10 from the Lake/Osceola county line (Lakola Road) to 220th Avenue on the east side of U.S. 131 will start July 29, costing approximately $1 million. The estimated date is mid-October. The project will include ramp closures to U.S. 131.

  • Eastbound Interstate 96 between Washington Avenue and Cedar Street near Lansing is set to start high-friction surface treatment July 28, officials say.

  • A $700,000 project starting July 28 will improve westbound I-96 bridge over M-52 (Stockbridge Road) in Webberville, with work inducing partial deck parliament and a new barrier wall. The work is set to end in mid October.

  • North- and southbound Interstate 75 will see single-lane closures /SB I-75 at Charles Brink Road south of Gaylord for maintenance. Work begins at 6 a.m. July 28 and will continue through Aug. 15.

  • North- and southbound U.S. 23 from Cordwood to Mulligan Creek Road east of Cheboygan will see lane closures for construction from Midnight July 28 through Aug. 15.

  • North- and southbound M-33 from Borden Road to 14th Street south of Mio will have one lane closed for construction, starting Aug. 1 and continuing through Nov. 22.

  • North- and southbound U.S. 23 in Standish, from M-61 to Old M-76, will see left and right lanes closed for work with lane shifts from 7 a.m. Aug. 1 to Nov. 14.

  • Eastbound Interstate 94, from Fletcher to Baker Road, west of Ann Arbor, will close for construction from Aug.1-6. A signed detour goes from Fletcher Road to Jackson Road to Baker Road.

How to check closures on all Michigan roads
