The suspect in a deadly car-ramming attack in Munich earlier this year has been issued with a new arrest warrant, charged with a second count of murder.
The 24-year-old Afghan is accused of driving into a crowd of trade unionists in the southern German city on February 13, killing two people and injuring at least 39 others.
The Federal Prosecutor’s Office, which took over the case due to its severe nature, announced the additional murder charge on Monday, alongside attempted murder and 54 counts of bodily harm.
Prosecutors suspect the attack was religiously motivated and categorize it as an attempt to threaten Germany’s free and democratic society.
The perpetrator was initially remanded in custody before being transferred to a psychiatric ward, where, according to media reports, he was to undergo a psychiatric assessment.
The suspect has since been transferred to the western city of Karlsruhe, where the Federal Prosecutor’s Office is based, suggesting he has been ruled fit to stand trial.
