One person is dead after an officer-involved shooting in Poulsbo that closed roads on the south end of the city overnight to investigate.
According to the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office, deputies arrived near the intersection Viking Avenue and Nordic Cove Lane Wednesday night around 9 p.m. to assist the Poulsbo Police Department, who were in pursuit of a vehicle that refused to stop.
When they stopped the car, officers approached the driver, who was armed with a large knife. Statements from both KCSO and the city of Poulsbo said the suspect threatened and attempted to stab the officers as they were making an arrest. Officers’ efforts to deescalate the violence was unsuccessful and the suspect continued to attack.
Deputies then shot the suspect, which KCSO’s statement referred to as “use of deadly force.”
No law enforcement involved were injured in the incident. The officers and deputies involved have been placed on critical incident or administrative leave, in compliance with agency policy.
The Washington State Office of Independent Investigations arrived on the scene to investigate, and KCSO said the state will deliver any further updates on the incident’s investigation. Viking Way and several nearby roads were closed all evening Wednesday and remained blocked on Thursday morning.
