A 19-year-old man faces assault and gun charges after police said he fired a gun into a Frederick home where children were having a sleepover, after a disagreement with his girlfriend.
An indictment for Markelle Isaiyah Lewis, 19, of no fixed address, was released Monday, including charges of first-degree assault, reckless endangerment, and use of a firearm in a felony.
Online court records listed Lewis being held at the Frederick County Adult Detention Center, with an initial appearance in Frederick County Circuit Court on Wednesday. The records did not list an attorney to represent him.
According to charging documents, officers from the Frederick Police Department responded to Schaffer Drive and Bicton Commons Drive, near Waverley Elementary School, around 6:30 a.m. on April 6 for a report of shots being fired in the area.
They spoke with a homeowner in the area, who showed officers multiple bullet holes in the front of her home.
The woman said her youngest daughter and about nine of the girl’s friends were having a sleepover at the house.
The woman said her son, who was 19, came home with a group that included a woman identified as Lewis’ girlfriend. They had been at a different party.
Witnesses later told police that Lewis and the girlfriend argued at the earlier party, according to the charging documents.
Officers found nine shell casings from a 9mm Luger handgun, and bullet holes inside the home, including in the second-floor kitchen and living room area where the younger children had been sleeping, according to charging documents.
“The believed entrance and exit holes from the bullets passed within feet from where the children were laying,” the documents said.
Security camera footage from the house shows a man, later identified as Lewis, knocking on the front door, as another man appears to try to get him to leave.
The detective later spoke with the second man, who said he was close with the homeowner and her son and had driven Lewis to the house but attempted to calm the situation down.
The man said he was speaking with the homeowner when he heard gunshots near him.
Two days after the shooting, a landscaping crew found a black handgun in the bushes about a block from where the shooting had occurred, charging documents said.
The gun included a switch beneath the slide that could turn the gun into an “assault weapon” and an extended magazine that can hold up to 31 rounds, according to charging documents.
The charges in Lewis’ indictment were:
* 12 counts of first-degree assault
* 12 counts of second-degree assault
* 12 counts of reckless endangerment
* use of a firearm in a felony
* use of a magazine of more than 10 rounds
* possession of a regulated firearm under age 21
* carrying a handgun
* carrying a loaded handgun
* possession of a firearm without a serial number
* wearing or carrying a handgun while under the influence.
