An 18-year-old Reading man was arrested after state police said he tried to flee troopers in a car after being clocked at well over 100 mph on Route 12.

The events unfolded shortly after 1 a.m. Wednesday on Route 12 eastbound near the Schuylkill Avenue exit. Troopers from the Reading station said the driver, whom police did not identify, was going 107 mph, which is 63 mph over the posted speed limit on that section of the Warren Street Bypass.

Troopers initially tried to stop the car at the Route 61 exit in Muhlenberg Township, activating emergency lights and sirens. The speeding car slowed momentarily before accelerating. The driver took the North 11th Street exit and as he was negotiating a right turn on the ramp, a trooper intentionally made contact with the right quarter panel, causing the car to become disabled.

The car’s passenger, a 19-year-old male from Wyomissing, was detained but then released.

The driver was believed to be impaired. He faces DUI charges as well as criminal charges related to the chase in addition to motor vehicle violations.
