The body of a 15-year-old boy from Raymond was recovered from Governors Lake in Raymond Sunday morning after a canoe he was riding in late Saturday capsized, dumping four people into the water, according to authorities.
Three other occupants of the canoe made it safely back to shore, according to reports from New Hampshire State Police and New Hampshire Fish and Game.
The teen’s body was found by Fish and Game Department divers at about 8 a.m. Sunday in roughly 9 feet of water just over 30 feet from the shore, authorities said. He was not wearing a life vest.
According to New Hampshire State Police, a group of four teenagers was out canoeing Saturday before midnight. At 11:53 p.m., first responders were dispatched to Governor’s Lake near Governor’s Drive after a 911 caller reported the overturned canoe, with one teenager missing and believed to be in the water.
New Hampshire State Marine Patrol, New Hampshire State Troopers, and N.H. Fish and Game, Raymond Police, Raymond Fire Department and Raymond Ambulance arrived at the scene and began the search for the missing teen.
State Police Supervisor Mike Anderson said the investigation is ongoing.
At this time, the death is believed to be accidental. The victim’s name was being withheld until an autopsy is performed Monday to confirm the cause and manner of death, State Police said.
