Sleepy Hollow has earned its reputation as one of the spookiest destinations in the United States, thanks in large part to Washington Irving’s classic tale, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. The story of Ichabod Crane and the Headless Horseman has been captivating readers since 1820, and the town continues to embrace that haunting legacy. Every October, the village transforms into a Halloween lover’s dream, with lantern-lit cemetery tours, ghostly folklore, and festive decorations around every corner. Its historic architecture and centuries-old cemeteries create an atmosphere that feels as though you’ve stepped directly into Irving’s pages. Combine that with crisp fall air and golden leaves, and Sleepy Hollow becomes the ultimate October destination for those who love a good scare—or simply want to soak in the ambience of a town steeped in legend.
Where to Stay: The Windrose on Hudson
When it comes to accommodations, The Windrose on Hudson is a true gem. This boutique property offers a stylish and cozy retreat with stunning views of the Hudson River. Its thoughtfully designed interiors balance modern sophistication with the charm of the valley, making it a welcoming escape after a full day of autumn adventures. It’s the perfect base for your fall getaway—close enough to all the seasonal attractions yet tucked away for a peaceful night’s rest.
We truly felt at home at The Windrose on Hudson. After a day of exploring, we throughly enjoyed evenings by the fire pits chatting and sipping wine. Our room was super cozy as well. In the mornings, we popped in to Cafe 56 for some delicious coffee. The cafe has indoor/outdoor seating so you can sip by the fireplace inside or take in a bit of nature outside.
Must-Do Fall Activities
The Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze
No trip to Sleepy Hollow in the fall would be complete without experiencing The Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze. This spectacular event transforms the landscape with thousands of glowing pumpkins carved into incredible designs. From whimsical creatures to larger-than-life structures, every display is a testament to artistry and fall magic. Walking through the illuminated grounds feels like stepping into a Halloween wonderland.
While you can get general admission for $24, I highly recommend the VIP Pass which includes entry to one of two dining experiences, You can enjoy signature cocktails, exclusive savory and sweet treats, table service, tavern games, and a special souvenir at the Gourd and Goblet, an authentic 18th century building operating as a tavern. This was the experience we chose.
You can also choose to check out the Headless Horseman’s Hideaway, a lively pop-up lounge featuring Legend-inspired cocktails, German-style bites, and spooky ambiance, plus visits from the Headless Horseman himself! Snap a photo, enjoy a festive sip, and grab a pretzel while soaking in the scene.
Lyndhurst Mansion
History lovers will find Lyndhurst Mansion to be a highlight of the season. This Gothic Revival estate is captivating year-round, but in autumn its dramatic architecture framed by vibrant foliage feels particularly enchanting. Inside, guided tours reveal the lavish lives of past residents while the sweeping grounds invite you to linger and take in the Hudson Valley views.
During spooky season, they add Victorian Mourning decor to pay homage to theprofiund cultural fascination with the supernatural and spirit communication known as spiritualism, which peaked during this era.
Philipsburg Manor
A stop at Philipsburg Manor is also a must for anyone exploring the area in October. This 18th-century living history museum once served as a thriving milling and trading complex and is now one of Sleepy Hollow’s most atmospheric attractions. In the fall, Philipsburg Manor often transforms into the site of haunted events and lantern-lit experiences, combining history with spine-tingling seasonal fun. Walking the grounds, complete with waterwheels, barns, and costumed interpreters, feels like stepping back in time—an experience that blends colonial life with the spooky legends of Sleepy Hollow.
Washington Irving’s Sunnyside Home
Another historical treasure is Washington Irving’s Sunnyside, the charming home of the author behind The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. The tour offers an intimate look at Irving’s life, complete with period details that transport you back in time. Visiting in the fall feels extra special, as the cozy grounds and storytelling atmosphere embody the very spirit of Sleepy Hollow.
During Halloween season, they decorate the grounds with fun fall, spooky fun photo ops.
Sleepy Hollow Street Fair
For a taste of local culture, the Sleepy Hollow Street Fair is a lively tradition each fall. The main street buzzes with vendors, handmade crafts, live entertainment, and plenty of seasonal treats. It’s the perfect way to experience the community, shop for unique finds, and sample flavors of the Hudson Valley while soaking up small-town charm. This event only happens one time a year so be sure to plan your vacation accordingly.
Sleepy Hollow Cemetery
The town’s history also lives on in the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, where Washington Irving himself is buried. Daytime tours highlight its significance, while the evening lantern-lit tours add just the right amount of spookiness. Wandering through the winding paths among centuries-old monuments is both haunting and fascinating—a quintessential Sleepy Hollow experience.
You can visit the grave of Washington Irving himself, as well as some of the characters he featured in his classic, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. We enjoyed each others company chatting under a tree on the lawn, exploring the tombstones of some of Sleepy Hollow Cemetery’s residences, and even capturing some stunning nature photos on the bridge located towards the back of the cemetery.
Sleepy Hollow’s Main Street
And of course, you’ll want to spend time strolling Sleepy Hollow’s Main Street, which offers an array of boutiques and specialty shops. From antiques to locally crafted gifts, browsing these storefronts is a wonderful way to slow down, take in the crisp autumn air, and bring home a keepsake from your trip.
