These are the 10 most traveled roads in the city of Peoria, according to data

PEORIA — Tens of thousands of vehicles travel on Peoria’s roads every day, commuting to work and visiting businesses.

The Journal Star reviewed data from the Illinois Department of Transportation’s daily car count figures for the city and compiled a list of Peoria’s most traveled roads.

Excluding Interstate 74, which sees beyond 40,000 cars travel on it daily, and Illinois Route 6, these are Peoria’s most traveled roads.

1. War Memorial Drive: 35,400 peak daily car count

Peoria’s busiest road per average daily car count is War Memorial Drive which splits Peoria down its center and connects the east and west portions of Peoria. The busiest stretch of War Memorial Drive, where the average daily car count goes above 35,000, is the stretch of the road that lies between West Charter Oak Road and Glen Avenue.

2. (tie) Knoxville Avenue: 24,900 peak daily car count

Peoria’s major north and south traveling road is Knoxville Avenue which connects Downtown Peoria to the most northern parts of the city. Most of Knoxville Avenue sees more than 20,000 cars daily. Knoxville Avenue’s busiest stretch of road, where the average daily car count is about 25,000, is near its intersection with Prospect Road, near Donovan Park.

2. (tie) Sterling Avenue: 24,900 daily peak car count

Sterling Avenue connects Farmington Road and Glen Avenue as it serves as an important road in Peoria, taking drivers to the Westlake Shopping Center and Northwoods Mall along with dozens of other businesses. Sterling Avenue’s busiest stretch, which sees 24,900 cars, is at its intersection with West Lake Avenue.

4. University Street: 21,100 peak daily car count

University Streets stretches from Bradley University’s campus to the northern end of Peoria. University intersects with most of Peoria’s major roads that run east and west and has multiple busy business corridors along it. The busiest stretch of University Street, where car counts exceed 21,000, is at its intersection with War Memorial Drive.

5. Allen Road: 19,400 peak daily car count

Allen Road connects War Memorial Drive to the most northern parts of Peoria. Much of Allen Road sees more than 10,000 cars daily, but the busiest portion of the road is near its intersection with Townline Road near Walmart and Menards.

6. Adams Street/Southwest Washington Street: 18,000 daily car count

Adams Street and Washington Street, which merge and interchange with each other in southwest Peoria, see a high number of daily car counts as the road nears Interstate 474. Car counts reach as high as 18,000 where the road meets Interstate 474.

7. Pioneer Parkway: 15,400 peak daily car count

Pioneer Parkway connects Knoxville Avenue and Allen Road and features a swath of businesses along its roadway. Pioneer Parkway’s traffic count peak at 15,400 between Pioneer Court and Sommer Street.

8. Glen Avenue: 15,000 peak daily car count

Glen Avenue runs through both Peoria and Peoria Heights, serving as an important corridor for both municipalities. Glen Avenue was the beneficiary of a major road reconstruction project. Glen Avenue’s car count peaks where it intersects with War Memorial Drive, where it sees 15,000 cars daily.

9. Willow Knolls Drive: 13,000 peak daily car count

Willow Knolls Drive is a busy stretch of road that connects University Street to War Memorial Drive running east and west in the middle of Peoria. It sees a peak car count of 13,000 daily near its intersection with University Street

10.) Sheridan Road: 12,700 peak daily car count

Sheridan Road runs north and south in Peoria in the center of the city. It is a busy business corridor and at its peak sees about 12,700 cars per day. The busiest stretch of Sheridan Road sits between Lake Avenue and Glen Avenue.
