Breeze Airways is about to start service on international routes, making it the first U.S. airline in more than 10 years to get approval from the Federal Aviation Administration to fly overseas.
Breeze flights to Cancún, Mexico; Montego Bay, Jamaica; and Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, are set to begin this winter from multiple airports the airline already serves.
“We picked places that have all-inclusive resorts because people like to go on Saturday and fly back (the following) Saturday. It’s a good complement to what we’re doing already,” David Neeleman, founder and CEO of Breeze Airways, told USA TODAY. He said the airline typically has peak traffic on its other routes on Thursdays, Fridays, Sundays and Mondays, meaning there’s spare capacity to fly to resort destinations on Saturdays when the demand is higher.
Neeleman said that international customers on Breeze will get the same service as on the airline’s domestic flights.
“We’re excited to be able to fly people out of the country,” he said. “You can expect the same great service and the same great airplanes on international, and I think it’s going to be a big hit with our guests.”
