This is the most underrated beach in the U.S. (shhh)

Must read

If you’ve ever arrived at a “relaxing” beach vacation only to find yourself wedged between umbrella armies and booming Bluetooth speakers, you’re not alone. According to new research from BoatBooker, the best beach experiences in America might be the ones with the fewest fans (at least online).

The company analyzed Google Maps data for phrases like “secluded beaches,” “hidden beaches,” and “quiet beaches,” filtering for spots with fewer than 100 reviews. The results? A list of 20 of the most peaceful coastal destinations in the U.S.—and a clear standout: Vereen Memorial Park in Little River, South Carolina, ranked No. 1.

Tucked away near the North Carolina border, Vereen Memorial Park has just 98 reviews, but an almost-perfect 4.9-star average. Its tranquil trails, marsh views, and uncrowded shoreline help it beat out even California’s coastal havens.

In fact, South Carolina dominates the ranking with five spots in the top 20, proving the Palmetto State offers stunning alternatives to its tourist-packed resort towns. Other standout states include California (with six hidden gems from San Diego to San Francisco) and North Carolina, home to four quiet coastal escapes including the Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

What makes these beaches so special? Many are nestled in state parks or protected nature reserves, meaning pristine sand, minimal development, and a slower pace. According to BoatBooker founder Vukan Simic, “America’s off-the-beaten-path coastline offers the authentic beach experience — unspoiled waters, stunning scenery, and the freedom to truly get close to nature.”

These hidden shores aren’t just beautiful, they’re also consistently highly rated, with all locations earning between 4.8 and 5.0 stars. Whether you’re looking for lighthouse views, wildlife sightings, or just a little room to breathe, 2025 might be the year to skip the obvious and discover the coastlines that locals have kept secret.
