TITUSVILLE — The Titusville Police Department announced this week that it is actively investigating the theft of $59,500 from an ATM at the Community Connect Federal Credit Union. Last Sunday, around midnight, Titusville Police were dispatched to the credit union for a report of a suspicious person, who was dressed in black and crouched down near the ATM, according to a police statement. Officers reportedly arrived seconds after the suspects fled the area on foot.
The department stated that when officers arrived, there was evidence of the machine being tampered with and about $1,000 in cash left at the scene. Police deployed multiple K-9 units to track the suspects at the scene.
The police determined that at least two actors were involved in the theft and the investigation has identified a vehicle that was believed to be involved.
A large sum of money was taken over an extended period that evening in a scam known as “ATM jackpotting.” This process involves criminals gaining access to the interior of an ATM, installing a software that changes programming to allow unauthorized access to the funds inside. Based on what is currently known, polices they do not believe the actors are local. Reports of this nature are occurring nationwide, police said, often targeting standalone ATM machines.
The Titusville Police Department said it is working with state and federal partners to resolve the case. They encourage anyone with information about the vehicle, a silver car, or the suspects to contact the department by calling 911 or (814) 724-2548. Police do not believe the actors are still in this area.
