A woman faces a child endangerment charge in connection with a toddler who was found wandering alone in North Haven on Sunday.

Officers were dispatched to State Street Café at 11:15 a.m. on the report of a young child walking alone behind the restaurant and found that the child was not with anyone, according to the North Haven Police Department.

A search of the area led to police finding that the child had been supervised by a family member identified as 20-year-old Elizabeth Mortey of Windsor, police said. Mortey had permission from the toddler’s mother to bring the child to a church service nearby on State Street.

During the service, police said, the toddler left without anyone noticing and began wandering around for about 20 minutes. The child was nearly 2 years old and was not injured, according to police.

Mortey was charged with risk of injury to a minor. She was released on a promise to appear and is expected to face a judge in Meriden Superior Court on July 31.

The child’s mother responded to the area and took custody of the toddler.
