President Donald Trump said the shooting at a Mormon church in Michigan on Sunday morning appeared to be “yet another targeted attack on Christians” — with the fatal shooting coming just a month after two kids were killed and several others were injured during a shooting at a Catholic church in Minnesota.
The president posted on Truth Social shortly after news of the Michigan shooting broke. Here is what he said:
I have been briefed on the horrendous shooting that took place at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in Grand Blanc, Michigan. The FBI was immediately on scene, and will be leading the Federal Investigation, and providing full support to State and Local Officials. The suspect is dead, but there is still a lot to learn. This appears to be yet another targeted attack on Christians in the United States of America. The Trump Administration will keep the Public posted, as we always do. In the meantime, PRAY for the victims, and their families. THIS EPIDEMIC OF VIOLENCE IN OUR COUNTRY MUST END, IMMEDIATELY!
His post comes after at least one person was killed in a shooting at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc, which is about 50 miles north of Detroit. Authorities said several other people were injured in the attack.
NBC News reported a 40-year-old man drove his vehicle through the front of the church before getting out and opening fire with a rifle. The church was “actively on fire,” according to police, and local officers believe the gunman set the church ablaze.
The attack on the LDS church comes a month after the deadly shooting at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis. President Trump has said he wants his second administration to focus more on anti-Christian attacks and bias; here is what he said during a speech at the Museum of the Bible in Washington, D.C. earlier this month:
“There is a tremendous anti-Christian bias. We don’t hear about it. You hear about anti-Semitic, but you don’t hear about anti-Christian. They have a strong anti-Christian bias, but we’re ending that rapidly, I will tell you. We’re in a much different world today than we were one year ago.”
