Must read

A juvenile was charged with capital murder in connection with a shooting that left a man dead early Friday morning in Cottondale.

At around 3 a.m., Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded after a shooting was reported in the 5400 block of 19th Street E in the Cottondale community. Cornelius Darnell Witherspoon, 39 was found dead inside his vehicle, said Capt. Jack Kennedy of the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit.

The Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit was called to assume the investigation.

Kennedy said Witherspoon was residing at the residence with his girlfriend and her children.

After conducting interviews, investigators discovered that Witherspoon and his girlfriend’s son had been involved in an argument, during which Witherspoon was shot and killed. Kennedy said the capital murder charge was made because Witherspoon was inside his vehicle at the time that he was shot and killed.

The suspect in Witherspoon’s shooting death, a juvenile, was charged as an adult. Since the suspect is younger than 18, no further information about the teen will be released.
