Two people were pronounced dead Sunday morning at the scene of a head-on collision on State Route 410 in Sumner. The driver who caused the accident was arrested for DUI vehicular homicide, said the Washington State Patrol.

WSP Trooper John Dattilo posted on social media about the incident at around 5:30 a.m. He said troopers and East Pierce Fire were called to the scene of a two-car, head-on collision at westbound SR 410 just west of Valley Avenue.

Dattilo said a wrong way vehicle was spotted going northbound in the southbound lanes of State Route 167 at State Route 512, and then it began traveling east in the westbound lanes of SR 410. It collided head-on with another vehicle just west of Valley Avenue.

Dattilo said the two occupants of the victim vehicle died on scene. He said the causing driver was transported to an area hospital and later arrested on suspicion of DUI and vehicular homicide.

The incident closed all westbound lanes of the roadway while investigators worked the scene. Westbound traffic was being diverted to Valley Avenue and drivers could re-enter at Traffic Avenue. Dattilo said the roadway was still closed at 8:45 a.m.
