Two males apprehended after crash involving stolen vehicle at I81/80

Jun. 18—BUTLER TWP. — Two males were apprehended while two others managed to elude capture after crashing a reported stolen vehicle on a ramp from Interstate 81 north to Interstate 80 east early Wednesday morning.

Pennsylvania State Police at Hazleton closed and partially closed the interstate junction and ramps at about 5 a.m. resulting in traffic becoming congested on the two interstates until the highways reopened at about 10:30 a.m.

A Mahanoy City, Schuylkill County, police officer spotted a vehicle reported stolen in Beaver Meadows, Carbon County, just before 4 a.m.

The driver of the stolen vehicle initiated a pursuit on Interstate 81 northbound and crashed on the ramp to Interstate 80 eastbound. After the crash, four occupants of the vehicle fled on foot.

Troopers armed with assault rifles and municipal officers searched the area capturing an adult male and later a male juvenile.

No injuries were reported.

State police did not release the names of the two males who were captured.
