Must read

NEW YORK — United Women in Faith honored the many lives lost in recent flash flooding in Texas and called for more to be done to prevent future tragedies.

“We are heartbroken to see the devastation wrought by flooding in Texas,” said Ilka Vega, executive for Economic and Environmental Justice. “We send our condolences and heartfelt prayers to all those impacted by this tragedy.

“With more than 120 lives lost, including 36 children, and many more still missing, the impact of this disaster is unfathomable.

“As the local community mourns and moves toward recovery, we urge elected officials to take action so that weather emergencies spurred by the climate crisis can be mitigated. With each passing year, severe weather incidents are becoming more frequent and severe. We cannot wait.

“The nation’s leaders must do all they can to address the climate crisis as a means of protecting current and future generations.

“We are asking our members and all others to call your representatives and find our environmental justice resources here to join United Women in Faith in action.

“As people of faith, we mourn with those who mourn, and we hold in our hearts those impacted by this deadly event. We are committed to advocating for community climate resiliency, renewable energy and just policies that mitigate and remedy the worst effects of climate emergencies.”
