VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — The Virginia Beach SPCA has taken in multiple dogs from multiple national animal cruelty cases.
As of Thursday, the shelter now has a total of seven dogs from the Humane World for Animals following two recent large-scale rescues.
“These animals have unconditional love, because that’s what they’re going to learn from us, is that they can be safe and they can be healthy, and they can be loved,” said Derby Brackett, VBSPCA CEO.
Five dogs were saved from a breeder in Maryland, where the animals were found living in neglectful conditions. Two dogs were rescued from a suspected dogfighting operation in Indiana.
“I think it’s always been an issue across the nation,” Brackett said. “I think what has changed is that our visibility and our availability as a transfer partner has heightened in their awareness.”
Just last week, the Virginia Beach shelter partnered with the Bissell Pet Foundation to take in six dogs from a severe animal neglect case out of Tennessee.
“They came from the hoarding situation, which is a very difficult situation,” Brackett said. “Many of them have never been held or loved, or know the comfort of the human touch.”
Bracket said that overall, all of the rescued animals are doing well and are on their journey to recovery.
The VBSPCA staff and veterinarians are assessing and providing medical treatment, safe shelter and compassion to help them heal until they are ready for their forever homes.
“Please come to visit us,” Brackett said. “They will be available on our website when the time comes and when they are ready for adoption, but certainly, there is an opportunity to donate at any time on our website.”
