Video captures shark swimming in flooded parking lot near Boynton Inlet

Sharknado in Boynton Beach? A sharking lot?

Call it what you want, but the king tides coupled with the untimely torrential rain Palm Beach County received the past two days brought an unwelcome visitor to a flooded parking lot near the Boynton Beach Inlet on Friday.

A shark was caught on video swimming through the parking lot as heavy rains and the king tide pushed ocean water into streets.

It’s not the first time sea life can show up in the Intracoastal Waterway, but large fish such as a shark? That’s extremely rare.

The video, which was posted on Instagram to @onlyinpalmbeachtv and and @561fishin, shows the shark swimming frantically through several inches of water of the parking lot.

The person who took and posted the video says, “look at this… only in Florida would you see something like this… hey don’t come over here now.”

In the fall, seasonal elements add to the high tide flooding, also called king tide flooding, as summer-warmed water expands and the Gulf Stream current is thought to slow, piling more water along Florida’s coast.

That means minor to moderate flooding in coastal areas, including on the mainland along streets that hug the Lake Worth Lagoon and Intracoastal Waterway. Coastal communities, including West Palm Beach, Delray Beach and Boynton Beach, posted notices online or sent email alerts with dates for this fall’s king tide dates.

The tide levels this year began rising before the Oct. 6 full moon, and peaked on the morning of Oct. 8, according Brian McNoldy a senior research associate at the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric and Earth Science.

Meanwhile, Boynton was doused with rains Thursday and Friday although the heaviest rains came in northern Palm Beach County and Martin County, which saw more than 3 inches.

Fortunately, a cool front that came through Palm Beach County late in the week will lower the temperatures, create drier conditions and lower the humidity for the next week with highs reaching the mid 80s, the first sign of some welcomed relief from higher temperatures and rainfall.
