A 32-year-old Wayne Twp. man was jailed in Schuylkill County Prison after he sparked a high-speed police chase Thursday in North Manheim Twp.
State police at Schuylkill Haven charged Tyler Styer, of Frieden Manor, after they said he tried to flee from a trooper and drove recklessly on West Second Mountain Road and other local roads, reaching speeds of up to 80 mph.
According to court documents:
A state trooper with the Schuylkill Haven station said he had stopped at a red light at Route 61 and Seven Stars Road in North Manheim Twp. when he saw a red Ford Focus turn onto Seven Stars, accelerating at a high rate of speed.
The trooper then followed the motorist down West Second Mountain Road, where the driver continued to proceed at high speeds. The trooper activated his emergency lights and siren, at which point the Focus continued to accelerate, reaching speeds of 80 mph and crossing the yellow center line on the roadway.
The driver ultimately pulled over on the shoulder of Greenview Drive, and the driver, Tyler Styer, was placed under arrest.
Police found the defendant had a suspended driver’s license and that he had an NCIC warrant for parole violation. When asked about the parole warrant, Styer said he was aware of it. Styer was subsequently transported to the PSP Schuylkill Haven station. Asked if he was under the influence of a controlled substance, Styer said he had not smoked methamphetamine since he was released from prison.
Police later had the defendant take a field sobriety test, and Styer showed signs of impairment. He later had his blood drawn.
Styer faces a third-degree felony charge of fleeing an officer and misdemeanor charges of flight to avoid apprehension and DUI. He also faces several summary charges for traffic violations and reckless driving.
Styer was arraigned Thursday by District Judge Andrew J. Serina and jailed in Schuylkill County Prison, unable to post $175,000 bail.
