Western Mass. rescue struggles to find homes for its dogs as it closes for good

Must read

A Western Massachusetts dog rescue is struggling to find homes for its remaining dogs as it prepares to close its doors for good.

Mutt Rescue, located at 102 Grove St. in Chicopee, is having one final dog adoption event on Sunday, April 27, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., according to the rescue’s website. The rescue hopes it can find adopters for the dogs still in its care during the event.

Mutt Rescue owner Lori Jerusik told Western Mass News that she has about a week to find homes for her remaining dogs. If she doesn’t, some may be euthanized, she told the news outlet.

Shelters across Massachusetts have struggled to find homes for dogs in recent months. Worcester’s city shelter has been at capacity since the end of the last year and has turned away over 150 dogs over the last six months because of it.

Last week, 10 animal shelters across the state waived their adoption fees for dogs in the hopes of making space for more dogs in need. Adoptions of large dogs has slowed in recent years, and Massachusetts shelters have been taking in more local dogs in 2025 than in previous years, the MSPCA said previously.

You can find additional information on how to adopt a dog from Mutt Rescue on its website.
