It’s been a full year since Rochester’s skies clouded over blocking any view of the long-awaited solar eclipse.
Thousands of tourists packed Monroe County and other communities throughout western New York on April 8, 2024 as darkness enshrouded Rochester and its surrounding towns for three minutes.
Some onlookers gasped while others remained silent in a shared moment of awe. It was a surreal sight – to experience nighttime in daytime during the total solar eclipse – even if we missed seeing the moon cover the sun since the entire visual was hidden behind clouds. Those eclipse glasses everyone scrambled to secure were simply not needed.
While we experienced the darkness, we couldn’t see the big show, despite our stellar front-row seats.
Here’s a look back and what the experience was looked like on April 8, 2024, in Rochester and beyond.
