The state’s liquor laws are famously confusing — with different rules for beer, wine and liquor, plus limits on certain days, hours and even the place.
Here’s what to know so you don’t get caught empty-handed this holiday.
How early can you buy beer and wine in Texas?
Retail stores that don’t sell liquor, like convenience stores and grocery stores, offer beer and wine at different times depending on the day. According to the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission, it’s as follows:
Monday through Friday: 7 a.m. to midnight
Saturday: 7 a.m. to 1 a.m. (on Sunday)
Sunday: 10 a.m. to midnight
Bars and restaurants follow a similar schedule, but on Sundays, they can only serve alcohol from 10 a.m. to noon if paired with food. If food isn’t in the order, alcohol-only sales begin at noon.
When are liquor stores open in Texas?
Liquor stores can sell alcohol from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
They are closed on Sundays, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
