As the weather gets warmer and summer gets closer, Memorial Day is fast approaching, falling this year on Monday, May 26.
Always celebrated on the last Monday in May, Memorial Day is a holiday in which the nation mourns and honors its deceased service men and women, according to the website for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA). Because Memorial Day is an official federal holiday, many businesses and organizations will be closed for its observance, but not all.
Here is a guide of what is open and what is closed on Memorial Day in Rhode Island.
What is closed on Memorial Day in RI?
Memorial Day is observed by placing American flags by the graves of former U.S. soldiers.
All state, local and federal offices will close to observe Memorial Day, including the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).
Schools are closed on Memorial Day, but with some exceptions. It is best to check with your school district.
The United States Postal Service (USPS) will be closed on Memorial Day, as well as UPS and FedEx. This means no mail will be delivered on Monday, May 26, and pickup services will not be available.
All banks will be closed on Memorial Day, but online banking and ATM services will still be available.
Libraries will be closed for the holiday.
Trash collection on Memorial Day, as well as all remaining collections for the week, will be delayed by one day.
The stock market is closed on Memorial Day.

What is open on Memorial Day in RI?
Most supermarkets, convenience stores, liquor stores and retail chains remain open on Memorial Day. Some stores, such as Costco, choose to close for the holiday, so check before you shop.
Many restaurants and fast-food chains remain open for the holiday, but locally-owned eateries may be closed. Check with the individual restaurant.
RIPTA will operate with a holiday schedule on Memorial Day.
Most National Parks remain open for outdoor exploration on the holiday.
