It happens with every holiday – you forgot something, and it’s July 4th.
You didn’t buy fireworks. You forgot to buy brats and burgers. You don’t have any more mustard for your hot dogs, and you know it’s wrong to use catsup. Something is missing.
Before you start hunting for an open store like a pirate searching for buried treasure, here’s a little help as to what’s open and closed on the Fourth of July.

The holiday is on Friday, July 4, 2025.
Are government offices open on the Fourth of July?
The Fourth of July is one of the 12 federal holidays for 2025. All federal offices are closed. State and local government offices throughout Delaware are also closed.
Are banks open on the Fourth of July?
No, it’s a federal holiday, so most banks, including the Federal Reserve, are closed. However, ATMs are available, and online banking services are still available.

Is mail delivered on the Fourth of July?
No, the United States Post Office is closed on all federal holidays, and you will not receive regular mail on the holiday. The USPS does deliver items sent through Priority Mail Express. Customers can order stamps, print shipping labels, order boxes and other mail supplies, and request package pickups through USPS.com.
UPS will not have regular pickup and delivery on July 4 since it is a company holiday. UPS Express Critical service is available. FedEx, FedEx Freight, and FedEx Logistics are all closed on Independence Day. FedEx Custom Critical deliveries will be made, and FedEx office (retail locations) will have modified hours.
What grocery stores are open on the Fourth of July?
Here’s a look at the state’s grocery store chains. Remember to always call before heading out in case there are changes.
Acme: Stores will be open, but pharmacies will be closed.
Food Lion: Stores will be open at their regular hours.
Giant Food: Stores and pharmacies will be open at their regular hours.
ShopRite: ShopRite stores are independently owned and operated, and holiday hours vary by location.
Sprouts: Stores are open during normal business hours.
Wegmans: Stores will be open at their regular hours.
Walmart: Stores will be open at their regular hours.
Are liquor stores open in Delaware on the Fourth of July?
Yes. Delaware only prohibits the sale of alcohol on Thanksgiving, Easter and Christmas. However, you will need to buy it a a liquor store. Grocery stores are prohibited from selling alcohol, including beer and wine.
What stores are open on the Fourth of July?
Feel like doing some shopping before the fireworks, according to Good Housekeeping, here’s what’s open:
Kohl’s: Stores will be open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Macy’s: Most stores will be open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Nordstrom: Stores will follow normal operating hours.
REI: Stores will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Home Depot: Most stores will follow normal operating hours.
Lowe’s: Stores will follow normal operating hours from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
CVS: Stores will follow normal operating hours, but pharmacy hours may vary by location.
Walgreens: Stores will follow normal operating hours.
Sam’s Club: Stores will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Plus Members get extended hours from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Are fireworks legal in Delaware?
In Delaware, sparklers and ground-based displays as well as a selection of other nonairborne, nonexplosive novelty items regulated by the federal government, are allowed to be sold and used, according to the Delaware Office of the State Fire Marshal. Patriot Paks, Razzle Dazzlers and Proud Eagles are among the permitted fireworks selection.
These fireworks can be purchased by a person 18 or older between June 4 and July 4 and between Dec. 1 and Jan 1.
Illegal fireworks for civilians to possess and use include bottle rockets, firecrackers or fire balloons, aerials like Roman candles and any other device that explodes or shoots into the air, according to the fireworks chapter of Delaware’s health and safety code.
Not only are these fireworks not sold in Delaware, but it is also illegal to purchase them across state lines and bring them back to Delaware to set off.
