Where is the country’s ugliest public art? A highway landmark in South Dakota made the list

Must read

Wall Drug has a lot to offer visitors, from free ice water to homemade doughnuts.

But the first thing many people see when they visit South Dakota’s iconic pitstop is the 80-foot green-and-white dinosaur trying its best to lure travelers off nearby Interstate 90.

However, the dinosaur, a 50-ton behemoth standing since 1967, was recently ranked among the country’s ugliest public art, according to Rivers Wall Art, a fine art printing provider that made the list based on a survey of 2,000 U.S. adults.

Here’s more about the rankings.

Where did the Wall Drug dinosaur rank on the list of the country’s ugliest public art?

The Wall Drug dinosaur is in 19th place out of 90 public art pieces on the list.

“Many say its sheer size and highway-camp visual make it feel more like a roadside monster than majestic spectacle,” the rankings say. “It’s earned its status as a beloved icon, but more so as one of the state’s most divisive and awkward landmarks.”

It wasn’t South Dakota’s only entry on the list, either. Cornelius, a fiberglass ear of corn outside of Mitchell’s Corn Palace, is 67th.

“Meant to be playful, Cornelius looks more like a giant, awkward children’s toy than a city mascot,” the rankings say. “The shiny surface and clumsy proportions give it a kitschy, unattractive look that’s more silly than celebratory.”
