While all 12 of Ward 6’s precinct’s have fully reported, the Democratic runoff between candidates Emon Thompson and Lashia Brown-Thomas was too close to call.
So far, Brown-Thomas, who received the second-most votes in the April 1 Democratic primaries, is beating challenger and slight frontrunner Emon Thompson in Tuesday’s runoff election, according to the unofficial results. But Jackson election workers said there are still absentee ballots to be counted, which could affect the overall results.
As of 11 p.m. Tuesday night, Brown-Thomas received 52.79% of the vote, or 1,534 votes. Thompson received 47.21% of the vote, or 1,372 votes.
There are no Republican or independent candidates challenging in the June 3 general election, so whoever ends up winning between Brown-Thomas and Thompson will become the next Ward 6 representative on the Jackson City Council.
The winner will join Ward 4 Councilman Brian Grizzell, who is also running unopposed in the general election and won his Democratic primary race.
Lashia Brown-Thomas is a Democratic candidate running for the Ward 6 seat on the Jackson City Council.
Incumbent Ward 6 Councilman Aaron Banks is not seeking reelection. He has not provided a reason for why he decided to not run again. In November, Banks was federally indicted along with Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba and Hinds County District Attorney Jody Owens. The three leaders are accused of soliciting and accepting bribes from undercover FBI agents who claimed they wanted to build a convention center hotel in Downtown Jackson. Banks, Lumumba and Owens all pleaded not guilty and a trial is set for July 13, 2026.
