The Washington City Council on Monday night approved increasing the number of allowable video gaming terminal licenses for two local bars.
The Peak, a bar located on Summit Drive, and Blue Ox on North Wilmor both approached the city about installing six gaming terminals each. To manage development, the city limits the number of gaming locations to 11 and the number of terminals to 57. On Monday, the council voted 7-0 to change a city ordinance to increase permits to 12 licensed gaming establishments and 72 total terminals.
Councilmember John Blundy was absent from Monday’s meeting.

The council discussed the request at a Committee of the Whole meeting in March, with councilmembers Brett Adams, Jamie Smith and Michael McIntyre expressing support for the businesses’ growth.
Adams said gaming terminals can boost small bar and restaurant establishments by offering more entertainment options, particularly after the detrimental effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“These are businesses, including these two, that are doing things the right way for the right reasons, so because of that, I think it’s an integral part of a small business like this, their business plan,” Adams said. “So I think they’re very much needed.”
The Peak and Blue Ox will join Becks, Bernardi’s Restaurant and The Brickhouse as some of Washington’s 12 video gaming establishments. Both requested to operate terminals starting May 1.
Washington city budget takes first step
In other news, the city’s budget was up for a first reading. While no discussion is had and no decisions are made during first readings, the budget will be approved April 21. A public hearing will be held 6:30 p.m. April 14 at Five Points Banquet Room A to give residents the opportunity to weigh in.
